Donate to the GNU PDF project

The Free Software Foundation (FSF)has put out a call for donations to support their efforts to develop "a free, high-quality and fully functional set of libraries and programs that implement the PDF file format and associated technologies to the coming ISO standard, ISO 32000."

The GNU PDF project

is working to implement support for the following technologies and specs:

- PDF 1.7

- PDF/A-1

- Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP)

- XML Forms Architecture v2.4 (XFA)

Describing its goals and motivations for the project, the FSF believes that because of PDF's status as a de-facto industry standard and its implementation by a growing number of government

s around the world, it is of extreme importance to provide free access to the PDF technology.

The foundation acknowledged that there was already software that did something similar, such as Ghostscript, but it decided to begin a new project that fulfilled the requirements of completeness, portability, efficiency and robustness regarding legal issues.

The project is on the FSF's high priority list and the donations will go towards paying for developers.

Donations of more than $500 (R3 415 at time of publishing) can receive an honourable mention on the FSF's Thank GNUs

page.

Unfortunately, although the FSF is a charity organisation (and a very well reputed one according to Charity Navigator

) donations from outside the US do not benefit from the tax deductions available.
