Google's open source contest for youths
Building on the success of the its last three Summer of Code programmes, Google has announced the Google Highly Open Participation Contest geared for pre-university students.
The programme's aim is to get younger people involved in all aspects of open source development, from fixing bugs to writing documentation and doing user experience research.
Open source projects in which participants will become invovled are Apache, Drupal, GNOME, Joomla!, MoinMoin, Mono, Moodle, Plone, Python and SilverStripe.
The contest is open to all students who are 13 years older and are
enrolled in a pre-university, such as high school or a secondary
school. All contestants under the age of 18 will need to have their
parent or guardian's consent to participate where applicable.
At the end of the contest, contestants will receive a t-shirt and
certificate for completing at least one task and $100 for every three
tasks completed, up to a maximum of $500 per contestant.
There will be 10 grand prize winners who will receive a trip to the
Googleplex in Mountain View, California, for an award ceremony for
themselves and one parent or guardian.
Entries were opened yesterday and participants can join up until
January 22. The competition ends on February 4 and winners will be
announced on February 11.
