2007 earns Apache more feathers in its cap
Open source and all-volounteer group, the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), today announced that last year finished as its strongest yet. Not only does this indicate just what most already know - that open source is growing from strength to strength - but also that it doesn’t take big money and a for-profit attitude for this to happen.
“We are grateful to all those individuals - members, committers, developers, users, and supporters - who have contributed to our success over the past year,” said ASF Chairman Jim Jagielski in a press release. “Our achievements reflect strong commitment from our community, boosting confidence in our ability to meet end-user and market demand and building excitement about the work that is underway.”
Having begun in 1999 with only 21 members overseeing the progress of the foundation’s flagship Apache HTTP Server, this year saw the addition of 56 members to total 259.
The Apache server, the most popular choice for websites, clocked up an impressive 74 percent market penetration across all web server domains, according to web server survey carried out on January 1 this year.
Having begun with just two top-level projects (TLPs), the ASF now has more than 55 TLPs) and a further 24 initiatives under incubation.
“With our proven success of working together, producing premium projects, building active and healthy user and developer communities and advancing innovative technologies, we have a tremendous opportunity to continue to meet future needs of this technology space, so important to the industry,” added Jagielski. “For us, ‘Community Over Code’ isn’t a slogan — it’s a way of life.”
Well, all we can say is well done and keep on collecting those scalps in the name of open source. How big chief.
